sound trouble in linux mint 8

does anyone know how to get the sound to work on a dell vostro 1000 laptop in mint 8?

You have to check out first if you have activated the faders in alsa mixer.
Open a terminal ( menu/accessories/terminal) and then type: alsamixer (as one word -type it as you see it).
This will open on the terminal a screen with some faders which you have to activate, ( if they are muted with a double MM on a box below them), by pressing the key "m" on your keyboard. Then if they are activated you have to adjust the volume on them with the up and down arrows. You are going to need the master and pcm volume faders and of course those that activate the head phones and the speakers. Don't activate the front and internal microphone if you don't need it, ( or however it shows you the microphones, because in each pc it shows them differently), because you are going to have strange noises every time you turn on your computer.

Check this and if you don't have sound we will check if it is a problem on your sound card's drivers..

The sound in Mint 8 is muted by default at installation and it goes to "mute" for some reason, even afterwards, at random.
Being simple myself, I can only think about simple things.
I'm sure that Marlene is more experienced than me. and her advise always works.
Check the speaker icon to see if there is a red (x) mark on it.
It could be just that.
